The Aitken basin is located southern hemisphere of the farside of the moon.
Its approximate coordinates are: 180∞ west 40∞ degrees south
The dimensions of the crater are approximately:
2500 kilometer in diameter
12 kilometers in depth
The basin is primarily composed of hard iron basalts
The crater is assumed to be formed by an impact from a comet moving at an acute angle, which was nearly parallel to the impact surface. The result was a large basin with a mix of crust and mantle. Over the ages many smaller comets have bombarded the basin, creating numerous small craters. Parts of these craters are protected from the scorching sunlight and may harbor the ice in small crevices.
