The Robots
The Captain:

This bot was inspired by the form of a tractor that drives over crops; in the competition we need to remove all the "weeds" (blue cups) from the "field" without disturbing our "crops" (yellow cups). The chassis was originally meant to be just a test, and Tristan tied the RCX to the top bar with dental floss.. minty fresh robot. Surprisingly the first model worked fairly well and we didn't have to start from scratch(It still smells nice too!).

Much to the disappointment of our coders this year, The Captain is simple as well as simpleminded. Armed with a compliment of 3 motors and a single light sensor, he only has to wait for the start light, and drive directly forward for stellar results. Next time we'll use the camera so the coders can have a real challenge.

The Sergeant:

This bot does what robots like best: not doing much. Taking advantage of the superb placement in front of the orange foam ball at the start, he is in charge of grabbing the foam ball, turning left, and letting go of the foam ball. As easy as this sounds, it was still a challenge for the team. Our favorite Mark didn't hesitate when jumping to the blackboard to draw up the trigonometry of various sensors that he begged us to include on the robot. Sadly, we all know simple is best and stuck to the infuriatingly simple and yet fearsomely blind dead reckoning.

The Sergeant works like a charm, doing its simple and vital role in supplying 10 points every round. As we all know, consistency is the key to doing well in any competition.
